About us
Our History
Woodlawns was originally built as Barham House in 1868 for the family of Beriah Drew, who laid out Leigham Court Road in 1839, by George Trollope & Sons (later to become Trollope & Colls). It became the family home of Joseph Harvey Trollope, one of George’s sons. In 1881 Joseph together with his wife, son and daughter lived here with six servants. In 1924 the last family to occupy the house was that of Sir Frederick Barthorpe JP, who remained until 1940. Through the efforts of David Robertson, the then MP for Streatham, Woodlawns was acquired in 1943 for use by the Streatham Darby and Joan Club who have been here ever since.
Status
The Woodlawns Centre is a registered charity and is entirely self-financing. Woodlawns receives no government grants, no council funding and no income from other charities. It derides its income entirely from the letting of office space to other charities and hiring function rooms for meetings, training sessions, private functions and parties. We are also a licensed Wedding Venue.
