The Woodlawns Centre is fortunate to be led by a Chair of Trustees whose dedication to community service spans almost five decades.

In 2024, Roger Bowdery was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s Birthday Honours in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Streatham community. The award celebrates years of voluntary service and leadership across a wide range of local initiatives.

Roger’s commitment to supporting others extends far beyond his role at The Woodlawns Centre. Throughout the years, he has played an active part in local education, serving as a governor for several schools and helping families through education appeals. He has also been instrumental in preserving and growing Streatham’s annual Remembrance Day service at the War Memorial, ensuring that this important tradition continues to bring the community together.

Since taking responsibility for organising the service in 1995, Roger has helped transform it into one of the largest civilian remembrance events in South London, attracting hundreds of attendees each year and providing an opportunity for residents of all ages to reflect and pay their respects.

At The Woodlawns Centre, Roger’s leadership and vision have helped guide the organisation through a period of continued development. As Chair of Trustees, he works closely with fellow trustees, staff and volunteers to ensure the Centre remains a welcoming and vibrant community hub for local people.

Those who have worked alongside Roger often speak of his unwavering commitment, attention to detail and genuine passion for making a positive difference. His ability to bring people together, build partnerships and support community initiatives has earned him widespread respect throughout Streatham and beyond.

While Roger is characteristically modest about receiving the British Empire Medal, the honour reflects what many local residents have known for years: his dedication, generosity and service have had a lasting impact on countless individuals and organisations.

Everyone at The Woodlawns Centre congratulates Roger on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his continued leadership, support and commitment to our community.
