“I have been involved with The Woodlawns Centre in various roles for more than 30 years. I first became aware of the Centre through a colleague at church who knew of my work running a Girl Guide unit for over 25 years. After taking early retirement, caring for my elderly mother, and volunteering extensively in the community, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. At a time when survival rates were much lower, I was fortunate to recover and was encouraged to help with administration at the Darby and Joan Club.

However, I soon found myself wanting to do more hands-on activities. I started running quizzes and craft sessions, helping members create greeting cards from recycled birthday and Christmas cards. The Guides also became involved, helping with cleaning and gardening, and building wonderful friendships with the club members.

One of my favourite memories is helping at the weekly dances. The members would arrive dressed in their finest clothes and dancing shoes, and eventually the Guides were invited to join in. Despite their trainers being very different from the ladies’ gold sandals, everyone enjoyed each other’s company.

As the Centre began hosting wedding receptions and parties, I became involved in decorating and flower arranging, creating displays for special occasions despite having no formal training. Over the years, the Guides and I contributed wherever we could, from maintaining the grounds to decorating the building for Christmas.

Following several management changes, and with the encouragement of Cheryl, we established the Enterprise Club to raise funds and enhance activities for members. Our first purchase was a washing machine, followed by many other improvements. Although the pandemic changed much of what we did, the Centre has continued to adapt and survive.

After another period of ill health, I returned to the Centre, albeit in a more limited capacity, but every week you will still find me running the Quiz on a Monday morning. It remains a place close to my heart, and I am proud that my contribution continues to make a difference.”

Joan Barclay has been a valued part of our organisation for many years and is our longest-standing volunteer. Her dedication, reliability, and willingness to help have made a lasting difference to our community. We are incredibly grateful for everything Joan has contributed over the years. Her enthusiasm and generosity continue to inspire both volunteers and staff alike.

Thank you, Joan, for your outstanding service and for being such an important part of our team.
